Shooting content for Instagram has always been a passion of mine. In the last year, my blog has allowed me to focus on perfecting the way I shoot my content and the direction of my aesthetic. There’s always room for improvement no matter how long you’ve been doing something and these quarantimes have forced me to seek alternative ways to get the best shot.
Shooting outdoors used to be my go-to move – I never really felt comfortable in front of the camera when I was inside my apartment. But since quarantining and social distancing have led to the need to get more creative than usual, I’ve discovered I actually love shooting indoors. So, I’ve decided to share some tips that work for me.
Here are my top tips for shooting Instagram content indoors:
1. Find natural light
The most important part of setting up a shot! Natural light is the best type of light to shoot in. My master bedroom is where I get most of my best shots because the sun hits just right either during or right before golden hour. This is my favorite time of day to shoot because the shadows are perfect for the style I’m going for. Once you locate the best room in your home to shoot with natural light, set up shop there.
2. Stage your background
A lot of influencers use a backdrop with a white sheet – I love this look! I don’t have one at the moment, but it’s definitely on my list to try. Currently, I like to use either my bed or my curtains as the background of my images. I purposely decorated my room to have all white decor because I knew it would look best in my shots.
3. Style your wardrobe
My favorite part! For this look, I chose a purple crop top and my favorite white trousers. I like to go for a very simplistic, often light-colored wardrobe choice because my feed lends itself to a very neutral color palette. Find whatever works best for your personal style but also something that will stand out in your image.
4. Diversify your poses
I’ve found that shooting indoors means you usually have a lot less to work with than if you were shooting outside. That means I have to pull out these random poses I’ve never tried before and feel kind of silly doing. Maybe about 30% of the time I actually like how they turn out (like a couple below) so I use them. Don’t be afraid to try weird stuff because it could become your new favorite pose.
5. Use a tripod with a Bluetooth remote
My tripod changed my life. It was a gift from my husband because he got fed up with being my photographer lol. In all seriousness, it is a revolutionary tool! Make sure you get one with a Bluetooth remote you can control via your phone. All you have to do is hide the remote in your hand when you click and voilà! The perfect shot is achieved.
